POTATO COMPETITION.
2b the Editor of the Star.
Sir, — Allow me to correct a slight mistake in your report of the Normanby Horticultural Society's meeting, in whioh you state that I proposed to alter the prizes from a first prize of £10 and three prizes of £1 each to £10 : first prize £5, second £3, third £2. The true facts of tha case are these. Several of tbe members of the society thought a prize of £10 without a second and third prize was too high a prize, and that it would be better to reduce It, and give a seoond and third prize. I was not in favor of having it reduced, as I believe by giving a £10 prize we shall have stronger competition; therefore, rather than have the first prize reduced, I proposed to give a second prize of £5, and a third prize of £2. The prizes are — First prize, £10 ; second, £5 ; third, £2. — I am, &c,
Richard Smith.
Manaia.
P.S. — Several persons here very strongly object to paying an entrance fee of 3s ; everyone here thinks that the Is entrance (seeing that I give the prizes, also £1 as a donation to the society) ought to have satisfied the society.
