Smith, one of the principal witnesses in the Mt. Rennie outrage, while in Batburst gaol, awaiting sentence on a charge of arson for which he had been convicted, came face to face with Donnelan, a youth concerned in the Rennie outrage, but whose sentence of death had been commuted, when the latter rushed at Smith and attempted to strangle him. The gaol warders overpowered Donnelan, and removed Smith to a place of safety.

The risks held by New Zealand offices on the premises and stock of Barlow Bros., seriously damaged by fire last night, were: — New Zealand office, i-4700 ; South British, £1000. The extent of the damage is £7500.
