CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held last evening at the Borough Chambers, convened by the chairman, Mr. J. Gibson, to take principally 'into consideration the disclosure in the tabulated statements of the "Wellington Chamber of Commerce, affecting the exports from the port of Patea in comparison with other ports. The exports for five years were put down as nil for 1883 to 1886, and /c>79 value for 1887, the transhipping ports gaining the credit consequently of nearly the whole, ot our export trade. About 20 members were present.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.

It wa9 proposed by the chairman, seconded by Mr. E. C. Homer, That the sum of £3 13s 3d, standing to the credit of the chamber, be devoted to paying a portion of the expenses of the deputation to Wellington re the port of entry. Carried. Proposed by Mr. Homer, seconded by Oldham. That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to those gentlemen constituting: the deputation proceeding to Wellington on the subject of the port of entry, and that those who promised subscriptions towards expenses be asked to hand them in at once, with a view to settlement of expenses incurred, and if not found sufficient, an effort be made to supplement the amount witbuut delay. — Carried.

The Chairman then explained the special object of the meeting, and read extracts from the report of the Wellington Chamber on the subject of exports.

It was unanimously thought desirable that a united effort should be made to get credit for the port for its exports, and considerable discussion arose as to the best means of so doing.

It was proposed by Mr. Cbrißtie, seconded by Mr. C. Syuaes, That the chairman be asked to communicate to with the Commissioner of Customs, asking him to be good enough to afford us any necessary information as to the best means we could adopt in order to obtain full credit for its exports, and that the matter be also brought before the member, if neces3ary.— Carried.

Mr. Homer gave notice of motion, That the annual subscription to the cbaruber be reduced to 23 6d for the future. April 18.
