On the 10th ultino a meeting of settlers was held at Mr. Malcolm's house, Kina road, when a resolution was passed asking the Tar an aid Education Board to proclaim a new school district between the Okahu river and Opua road. Mr. Gane, as chairman, forwarded it on the 12th. The board's secretary replied on the 16tb, saying the board had consented, and instructed him to call a meeting of settlers living between the Okahu river and Opua road, to decide upon the boundaries ; would Mr. Gane confer with Mr. Chapman as to the best time and place to hold the meeting, and let hitn know at earliest convenience so that he could avertise the meeting. Mr. Gane, objecting that Mr. Chapman has no qualification in the boundaries named by the board's resolution, did not confer with him, but replied to the secretary, giviug the infomation asked, stating Saturday, 24th, allowing time to have laid the result of the meeting before the board at their next meeting on tbe 28th; but on tbe 23rd Mr. Gave received the following from the secretary :—": — " As further correspondence has come in regarding the proposed new school district, I shall ""fie obliged to await the instructions of tbe chairman of tbe board before calling the meeting of householders." Settlers being at a loss to account for such strange proceedings, passed a resolution disapproving of the action taken by tbe secretary, and forwarded it to the board. On the 29th the secretary wroto that "the delay, of which the meeting, beld on the 21<ib, complained of, was, under the circumstances, quite in accordance wibb tbe board's instructions, and thd action was approved, but the meeting would now be duly advertised, to beheld on the 7th April." The result was a well attended meeting of settlers living between the Okabu river and Opua roa3, held on that date, great interest being taken in the matter. Mr. G. W. Gane was unanimously elected chairman, and explained the object of the meeting. M. Williams proposed and Mr. A. Coffey seconded. That the Education Board be respectfully requested to proclaim the boundaries of the Oanui school district as follows : — Tho Okahu River on the north, and the Opua Road with tbe portion of the Okaweu stream to the sea south of Main South Road. Carried unanimously. Tbe Chairman asked for nominations of candidates for the committee, when 13 gentlemen were nominated. Before taking the ballot, it was resolved tbat Messrs. Silvester and Strange be scrutineers, the result of tbe poll bein^ tbat Messrs. G. W. Gane, A. Coffcy, J. Morrison, D. Lusk, T. Collins, L. Williams, and J. McGregor were elected in the order named. This concluded the business of the meeting.
