, j • -• n ErasTH. AsrcrakL Beport o? iHfiHAmEi. AccnuiUTisAiiow SooiETY.—la i presentuag the eightlT- annnal vteport-; of £he' above, society, yout Becretwv k*a pleasure ins drawing attention to the fact that- tbe society has increased^,, in' numerical strength during the year. Fifty-six members qualified by taking oat. a license to kill game, ten persons took oat fishing licenses, and one- paid the membership fee only of one pound. JFISH. The operations of the society this year were corifiued to the procuring of some 4000 American brook trout fry from tbe Maßtetton hatching pou&B. The chairman and secretary of the Wellington Society travelled with the fry, which were liberated in tbe Waingongoro, Kapuni, Kaupokonui, and Oeo streams. The fry * were only a fortnight old, but were strong and in good order. The Wellington Society has such extensive plant ior fish hatching, that it is proposed to make a grant in aid of their hatchery this year (1888), they having offered to supply as many fry in return for the monetary assistance given, as they can poßsibty afford. They strongly recommend tbe liberation oi Jbooh lieven trpatras-a game and superior variety bf L ' trout. The society in 1887 for the first time has issued licenses to fish for tront. Ten have been issued, and several holders have canght considerable numbers offish," ranging up to 3£lbs weight. In the^' earlier part of the season, most of .the trout caught were in low condition, and it would . probably be advisable to defer the opening to November Ist. Perch have been sent for, but have not come to ■ I hand. PARTRIDGES AND STARLINGS. | A grant of £10 was made last year to assist Mr. R. B. Pearce in his efforts to acclimatise partridges ; in tbe annual report for 1884, reference was made to the^society having set aside £20 ' for that! purpose. I hear that Mr. Pearce has" - succeeded in getting fonr young partridges hatched at his aviary. The society also J imported, from Dunedin, 140 starlinge, atj; a cost of about £11. . j .. HAWKS AND SHAGS. A reward of 6d per head for hawks and/ Is per head for shags has been' offered by ' the society during the year.' This has resulted in the destruction of 236 hawks and 19 siiags daring the year, at a cost of £6 175. ' • KED DEER. - An effort has been made to procure red , deer for distribution on Mt. Egmont forest reserve ; the Taranaki Acclimatisation, „ Society assisting. Up to the 'present, 11 ' none have been secured. The forest ranger of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society has undertaken ■ to try and catoh some fawns. FINANCE. r During the year, has been received* jj There was a credit balance on January I, ' 1887, of £63 13s sd, and on January 1, 1888, there was a credit balance of £62 0s Bd. So that expenditure fust about balanced income during the year. OFFICERS. The officers of the society relire in the usual course, but are eligible for re-elec-tion. GENEEAL. No trout have yet been caught in the Waingongoro, Kaupokonui, ' or Kapuni Streams. But I gather from men of experience in other districts that the larger rivers take very much longer to stock up to "angling point " than smaller streams. Nothing further has been seen of any of the salmon fry liberated in the Waingongoro and Kaupokonui. The balance-, sheet, duly audited by Mr. A. W. Budge, '. . is attached to this report.
