SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the committee was held on Wednesday evening last. There were present — Messrs. McHardy (in the chair, in the absence of the chairman), Crowther, Cross, and McSweeney. The minutes of the last meeting were read.

Correspondence was read from Mr. Greig — in reply to a communication from the committee, asking him to reconsider hiß resignation — that he regretted being unable to comply with the request of those members of the committee who still wished to retain his services v a

fellow-worker. — T. Kelly, requesting the committee's support for election as a member of the Education Board. — R. H. Gibson, to like effect.

The inspector's report showed a total roll, at date of examination, 15th Nov. last, of 85. The percentage of passes was 31 per cent., and of failures 42 per cent. The inspector remarks that the results are about the same as last year. There is a want of accuracy in many of the papers ; to some extent, this may be excused, as the attendance had Deen irregular owing to the recent sickness. Marks in pass subjects, 59 per cent. Resolved, That the committee sapports Messrs. Gibson and Olson as members for the board.

Resolved, That the committee accepts Mr. Greig's resignation with regret. Resolved, That Mr. Penningtoa be elected a member of the committee. '

Accounts amounting to £3 were passed for payment.

Mr. W. L. Newman, hon. secretary of the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society, taking advantage of the visit of his brother, Mr. J. H. Newman, of this town, who was one of the cricket team which played New Plymouth last year, sent down with him 60 trout, which were liberated immediately on arrival here in the Waiaua, about 200 yards (above the bridge. Tbe fish stood the journey well, and they were all safely liberated and at once asserted their right to liberty. Judge Wilson, Native Lands Court judge, and other members of the court arrived on Saturday. The court will commence its sitting on Monday next. January 29.
