The Government has decided to make reductions during the current financial year in the salaries of civil servants, amounting iu the aggregate to £80,000, and it is probable that next year the saving effected in this direction will exceed £400,000.

Sir J. Macbain, President of the Legislative Council, entertained Earl Carnarvon at a banquet in Queen's Hall last night, at which the Governor and a large distinguished company were present. Proposing the health of the guest of the evening, he eulogised the services both as statesman and for the sympathy he had always manifested in the welfare of the colony. Replying to the toast, Earl Carnarvon declared that Australia was taking a place among European nations. He

congratulated the country upon the settlement of the New Hebrides difficulty, which had only, he said, been achieved at tbe cost of Egypt and tbe Suez Canal, and the lattai was almost as important to Australia as to England. His Lordship concluded by congratulating the colony upon the speedy progress which had been made in the passage of the Naval Defence Forces Bill. ADELAIDE, November 24. The second reading ot the Naval Defences Forces Bill was carried in the Assembly this evening, without opposition, and was subsequently passed through all its stages. It i 3 understood that the Federal Council of Australasia will meet at Hobart on January 16th. Wheat is quoted at from 3s 5d to 3s 6d ; flour at £8 5s to £9.
