Advices from New Guinea report that the expedition to the highlands of British New Guinea, under the direction of Mr. H. O. Forbes, has reached the foot of Mount Owen Stanley, the loftiest mountain of the lange. Mr. Forbes 1 attendants deserted him on arrival at the mountain, owibg to their superstitious dread of proceeding in the ascent, and also their fear of hostile natives. On returning to the main camp, the explorers found that it had been looted in their absence. SYDNEY, November 21. A rumor is current that the proposed new name for the colony is " Australia." Haulan is improving in favor for the coming championship, on account of his good training. (SSECIMi TO PRESS ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, October 17. A telegram received in Brussels from from Congo states that owing to the treachery on the part of Tippoo Tib or the opposition of unfriendly Arabs, it has been founJ inlpossible to send reinforcements up the Congo. The Arabs at Stanley Falls are armed with German ribes, and occupy a strongly entrenched position. Fighting has already taken place with the rear guard under Major Bartlelot, who accompanied the expedition, and who was left with a force oi 100 men in camp at Yambunga, at the foot of the Aruwhim Rapids. Stanley, with the main expedition, consequently is completely isolated. Mr. Goschen states that the delegates to the recent Imperial Conference held Unionist, and not Home Rule, views. LONDON, November 19. The Divorce Bill introduced by Sir Alfred Stephen, and which passed the New South Wales Legislature, has received the assent of her Majesty the Queen. Bell, of Queensland, has won the Colquohoun sculls. Lord Lytton defeated Lord Roseberry in the contest for the Rectorship of Glasgow University by the casting vote of the Chancellor. In the event of M. Gre"vy resigning the Presidency of France, the following are likely to become candidates for the position : — M. Jules Ferry, M. de Freycinet M. Carnot, and General Saussier. Several of the grave charges of corruption, which were preferred against M. Daniel Wilson, have proved to be false. H.M.S. Myrmidon, surveying vessel, has been leconimissioned for surveying in Australfan waters. The wintry weather has hardened the wheat market, and there is a general advance of 6(3. A similar rise has taken place on the Continent and in America. Australian cargoes on the spot are quoted 345. Two cargoes to arrive in December have been sold at 33s 6d. A cargo of 60,000 quarters to arrive in January has been disposed of at 345. Flour is 6d dearer. November 20. The reception of the Czar of Russia on his arrival in Berlin was cold, so far as the public wa? concerned, but he was received with great military pomp. Prince Bismarclv had an interview with the Czar, which extended over an hour. The apathy shown by the public authorities in swearing-in special constables was due to the apparent collapse of the riotous behaviour of the unemployed. The French Government was defeated by 328 to 242. The majority was composed almost equally of Conservatives and thoEe holding extreme Republican opinions.
