The mayoral election will be held on November 30th. This is also the Cattle Show day. Burgesses must not forget to vote for the mayor in the excitement of discussing the points of the best longwoolled sheep. The names of Messrs. Major, G. V. Bate, and one or two others have been mentioned as probable candidates for the honor.
Great success attended the fishermen who went up to the Ngatora-iti stream, near Inglewood, to fish for trout. Messrs. Soutbey and C. Budge returned to Hawera to-day, bringing with them some very handsome fish, weighing from three to five pounds each in fair condition. The fish were caught with the artificial minnow. Other fishermen in the same stream caught some good trout a few days previously. They are, however, reported to be of inferior flavor, probably owing to the large amount of decayed vegetable matter in the streams derived from felled bush, etc.
It is a fact not generally known says he Oamaru Mail, that about 20 years ago a Bill was passed by the New Zealand Legislature to reduce the Governor's salary to but the Queen disallowed it. ' It is 'sot likely that Her Majesty would do so again — the people would not permit such an interference with their right. It is to be expected that before long the colony will ask to be allowed to exercise the privilege which hae been granted to it of choosing a Governor from amongst its own citizens. If this privilege were brought into play, the question of salary would be entirely in the bands of colonists.
