Castoff is a black, got by Castaway, his dam Mavis by Diomedes (imp.), out of Victoria (N.Z.5.8., vol. iii , p. 34), by Operator, her dam Lady Matilda, by Bay Catnerton, out of Miss Nettleton, an English thoroughbred mare imported to Australia from India. Castaway (N.Z.5.8., vol. y., p. 51), by Traducer, out of Mermaid, was a great performer on the turf himself, and was full brother to those celebrated racehorses Malice, Lurline, Le Loup, and Lure. CastofTs stock are admitted to be the beet hacks in the district, while his sons, Euapehu and Tongariro, have been very successful on the turf.
