MEAT-TINNING. . j (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) ' About 150 people front all parts of the i district abienbeh bh& mettimf? r* ii»»i»£ works yesterday; Mr. Oliham being present also. Mr. J. V. Smith took tb* chair, and called upon Mr. Cowern to 6tate to the meeting the present state of the subscription list) which showed at the outset the following result : — £ Fatea and immediate surroundings 850 South of do 173 North of do 255 Hawera 139 £150 further was offered in the room, exclusive of £100 offered by the Anchor S.S. Company (through Mr. E. C. Homer), provided works were promptly started and the subscription fully guaranteed ; and also that Fatea was the port of shipment. , About =£300 being still required to make up £1500, it was at once guaranteed by twelve gentlemen present. Mr. Oldham stated that he would proceed with the works at once. It is a matter for sincere congratulation that these works are at last an absolute reality ; and we may hope to see a revival of trade and improvement of all classes of property in a very short time. It is, however, to be lamented that , a more liberal spirit was not evinced by many of those most nearly interested, as they will derive direct benefit from the erection of the works ; and certainly not a; tithe of settlers have subscribed to the scheme, so the onus falls on a few of those more liberally- minded. '< The County Council sat to-day; also , the Hospital Board.
