BOXING MATCH.

A boxing match took place at the Opera House on Monday evening, the contestants being H. Laing and Charles Richardson, styled, respectively, champion of Sew Zealand and middle-weight champion of Victoria ; and the stakes were £50, the honorable title of Champion of New Zealand being also involved. The " match " was much in Richardcon'i favor for the first round or two, but after that it was more even, both men bitting out freely, Richardson getting somewhat the worst of it. In tho seventh and eight round Laing gave his opponent severe punishment, and the gas was suddenly turned .out. The Times says: — An uproar which ensued was stopped when lights were obtained, and the elegant taste of the ; audience (which was a very large .one) was pleased when, in the ninth round, the hitting all round was terribly severe. They enthusiastically- applauded when . blood ran from ; Richardson's face, and shrieked their approval when the "boxers," almost fagged, wildly hit at each other in a corner. Richardson adopted rather peculiar tactics in this; round, and went down on his hands and knees several times to avoid punishment. In the tenth round be did the same, and the referee (Mr, G f Williams) ijave tbe " matoh " to Laing, on the ground that Richardson bad wilfully gone down to escape punishment. The losing pugilist was verj much disgusted at this decision, and there was a good deal of excite? ment on it. As a matter of fact a referee should havo given Rich* ardson the "match" before matters reached this stage, Laing having hit his opponent on two occasions, after . being called upon to let go a clutch. - Thus the affair wa.s most unsatisfactory from the most ardent sportsman's point of view. The Times hopes that we have seen the last of these . " matches." The gloves that are used are unworthy the name, and it is simply remarkable that two men should be allowed to better ewb, other about in public as did these two last night. Even the rules that regulate such contests .were coolly ignored last night, and the whole affair was certainly not a creditable one. Such should never be tolerated in a well-governed community."**
