PATEA.

(fkom our own correspondent.)

R.M. COURT,

A case of considerable importance came before the R.M. Court to-day, in which P. C. Gowland, butcher, was charged on two informations, the one with obstructing one of tbe county slaughterhouse inspectors and refusing to allow his stock register (as required by the Slaughterhouses Act) to be examined ; the other in that P. O. Gowland bad failed to render tho necessary weekly returns of stock slaughtered, and bad not kept a register as required by tbe Act.

Mr. G. O. Hauier ton appeared for the county inspector, and Mr. T. Hutchison for defendant.

Very contradictory evidence was given on the first information, the inspectors alleging that they had been refused to be allowed to thoroughly examine tbe books, aud that Mr. P. C. Gowland bad taken tbe book away from the inspectors ; and the evidence for tbe defence alleging quite tbe contrary. Hia Worship, in dismissing the information, dwelt on tbe extremely contradictory evidence, and stated that in consequence obstruction was not fully proved. The second information was withdrawn.

Costs and witnesses expenses were refused bj the magistrate, as it was thought defendant's sou had not behaved in a proper manner to those authorised to examine the books.
