Waimate Football Club.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

An extraordinary general meeting of the above club was held at McCarthy's Hotel, Manaia, on Saturday, when there were about twenty members present. Mr. Rogers was voted to the chair.

The balance sheet was read by Mr. Falkner, the secretary and treasurer. A credit balance of 4s was brought forward from last season, and there is now a balance in hand, after paying all debts and a triffe for debts of the season before, of Us Id.

The balance sheet was adopted, and the minutes of the last general meeting were confirmed.

It was arranged that the secretary should get the ground ploughed, and that all the members of the club be requested to attend on the ground early on Thursday next, for the purpose of levelling it and sowing the seed.

PRESENTATION.

Mr. Bud^e then addressed the chair. He said he had been requested to perform a very pleasant duty. It would be remembered that several years ago Mr. J. R. Stewart, immediately after his arrival, took in hand the onerous work •f forming a lootball club out of very raw material. It will be fresh in the ruiods of most of those present, how hard Mr. Stewart, who was elected Captain, had worked, and at no inconsiderable expense to himself, succeeded in forming a club thai after the first season worthily upheld the honor of the district. The result was mainly due to the good management of his team by the captain, who never expected anything but the best from each man, and who never expected more than he was prepared to give himself. He was always to be seen in the thickest of the fight. He (the speaker) was sure that although the trifle to be presented was of small intrinsic valae, yet when it was understood that it had been purchased by the purposelylimited subscriptions of the whole of the members of the club and a few friends, it would no doubt give it a value which would be appreciated by the recipient. He had great pleasure, in the name of the "Waimate Football Club, in presenting Mr. Stewart with a pipe, on which there appeared on a silver band the following inscription :—"J. K. S. From W.F.C. 1886." Aud would call on the members to drink the health of the recipient with musical honors.

After the tonst had beeu responded to, Mr. Stewart thanked the members for the gilt, aud referred in happy terms to the many pleasant days spent with the team. He was glad to see that in outside matches when combined with other clubs our club was well represented, this proving that our men were looked upon as quite able to uphold the honor of the clnb against outsiders. He did not as, perhaps, some had thought start the clnb here for his own gratification, but at the request of a few friends. Although a "rolling stone gathers no moss " he would look upon the pipe just received as one of the pieces of " moss " that he certainly would retain as long as he lived carrying' with it as it did the good wishes of tup donors. (Cheers.) Various other toasts were drunk, and the company separated just before midnight.
