Trial of the Remington- Lee Rifle at Polhill Gully.
, ;*A number'6l the Remington-Lee rifles Imported by the. Government for the members of the New Zealand Rifle Association, and which arrived by the last boat •from San Francisco, were brought on to Wellington by the Australia and were tested by Messrs. W. and A. Ballinger at Polhill, Gully. Taken as a whole the** Bhooting was very' good, particularly at the'long range, and Messrs. Ballißger appear perfectly satisfiea with the-new-rifle, Mr. W. Ballinger making a total of 85 out of a possible 100.' Five shots fired at the various ranges 200, 300. 500, and 600 yards, and two trial ■shots were allowed so as to test the sights. The advantage of the latter arrangement was proved when shooting at the 600 yd range, as both trial shots missed the target altogether, owing to the 6ight not carrying true, and it was found necessary to raise the sight above the 600 yard mark to get the range. The same result waß experienced by both marksmen. Messrs Ballinger were unable •to test' the rifle at the longer distances owing to there being no long ranges in the Gully. Sergeant Pairbrother of the Carterton Rifles was in charge of the party, Gunner Bourke of thfi D Battery acting as marker. The following are the scores':—
