MELBOURNE, September 20. Barlow, who was arrested at Molong, New South Wales, on the 6th met., on a warrant charging him with embezzling £500 from the Carlton branch of the London Chartered Bank, of which he was teller, was brought to Melbourne on Friday night, and placed in the Carlton watch-house.
The magisterial inquiry into the death of Joshua Duffat. wh« shot himself near Dandenong on Friday morning, was held on Saturday. The jury found that deceased came to bis death by a gunshot wound inflicted by himself.
Last Wednesday, the Rev. Cameron Lees was present at a conversazione given in his honor by members of the Scots Church. After having acted as temporary minister, the rev. gentleman leaves to-morrow, per Tarawera, ana returns to Scotland via New Zealand.
Mr. Hisch Fink, in the name of his late brother, Mr. Moses Fink, and himself, has sent a donation of £1000 to tbe trustees of the Agricultutal Education Council's properties, for the purpose of founding an agricultural scholarship. Mr. Fink explained to the postmaster, through whom the gift has bepn sent, that one of the motives which actuated bim in making the gift was his desire to recognise the civil and religions liberties enjoyed by the Jews throughout the British Empire.
Papers which have been received by the Customs from the Governor of Celebes, iv regard to the loss of tbe barque Glaslyn, in the Malay Archipelago, in Febuary last, while on the voyage to China, have given a serious aspect to the occurrence, inasmuch as they imply that the vessel wa" set on fire before being abandoned. Under the auspices of the Geographical Society of Australia, Mr. Ernest Giles, explorer, ia shortly to take a small exploring party into central Australia, where there is a trood dual of territory as yet unknown. James Kelly is to be the manager.
Schukraft, convicted of defrauding tho Customs, was brought up for sentence on the 16th instant. Being convicted on 10 charges, he was fined £100 in each case, or imprisonment Tbe amount was immediately paid and the defendant discharged.
ADELAIDE, September 19.
Mr. Justice Boucart to-day heard the appeal against the warrant issued by Mr. Bedome, Police Magistrate, for the return of the Rev. Radcliffe to New Zealand to answer charges of committing a breach of the bankruptcy Uws. After considerable argument, the Judge granted bail to the prisoner on his own recognisances for £500 to return to New Zealand to answer tbe charge within the ensuing twelve months, unless be can satisfy his creditors, aud get the proceeding against him annulled. The prisoner was accordingly discharged, and left this afternoon, per Oroya, for England.
