AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY.

(special to press association.)

MELBOURNE, September 24.

Sir Henry Parkes arrived here on Satur day en route for Adelaide. During the morning he had an interview with Mr. Gillies and several other members of the Ministry on various questions of intercolonial importance. The first subject discussed was that of the ndvisableness of the federation of the colonies for the purpose of military defence. This was considered without reference to any other subjects. Ministers were pretty well in accord as to what should be done, so much so that Sir Henry Parkes requested them to draw up a plan. The next subject considered was that of the influx of Chinese to Australia, but time did not allow ot the matter being very fully discussed yesterday. Sufficient was done, however, to show that the Governments of Victoria and New South "Wales are virtually in favor of prohibition, or rather in favor of steps which would amount to virtual prohibition. They also discussed the landing of French criminals iv the Australian colonies, and both Premiers were anxious that the colonies should be effectually protected in this respect.
