A Singular Maori Lawsuit.

AUCKLAND, September 23.

A singular lawsuit, which promises to occupy attention for some days, was opened at the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, A native woman named Tareha Taroa claims .£lO 10s, the value of two horses which she alleges have been wrongfully taken possession of by one Mihi Wiremu. The facts of the case are as follows. In November of last ypar a Maori was drowned in Hauraki Gulf, his body being found atter a lapse of a few days, when it was seen to have been eaten considerably by fish, and in consequence of this all fish in Hnumi Gulf were tapueil. Tareha, the plaintiff in the present actiou, shortly afterwards came to Auckland, and whilst in the city, she partook of sclmapper, which was afterwards found to have come from Hauraki Gulf. A row arose in consequence amongst the natives, and Tareha was cursed by the relatives of the deceased Maori. A Maori committee was appointed by Tawhiao, for Mihi Wiremn was guilty of a gross offence in cursing Tareha, and she was ordered to pay i'lo 10s or give two borpes to Tareba. She forthwith gave these two horses to plaintiff, and seized them again, and the present action was to recover the horses. The case has been adjourned till Tuesday.
