The efforts of the auihorities to detect any sign of small-pox on the passengers by the Wakatipu are without avail, and as the disease from which the man was suffering was in its latent stage, it is not believed that contagion would 'be communicated, and that there is no danger of an outbreak. TIMARU, July 1. The inquest on the fire at the woollen factory was concluded to-day, when the following verdict was given : — " Origin of the fire unknown," and the jury intimated they considered there were strong elements of suspicion, and added as a rider tbat insurance companies did not exercise sufficient care in accepting risks. The coroner concurred with this. Expert evidence showed that the stock was worth less than JG2OO, whereas it had been insured tor £500. DUNEDIN, July 1. At a meeting of creditors of Mr. Thomas Bracken a resolution was passed sympathising with him on his loss, and making no claim on his personal effects. July 4. Tbe shop of William Davis, fancy warehousemen, Qeorge-Btreet, waß completely gutted by fire. Peterson's cooperative stores and Sing Hing's tea shop adjoining were considereably damage. Davis* insurance, Manchester, .£500; Peterson's stock, I*soo Equitable; Sing Hing's £800 Staudard, half reinsured. The premises belonging to Hallenstein were insured for £500.
