NEWS AND NOTES.

We have lately been favored with letters by the dozen on electioneering matters. It would be easy enough to destroy some of those which throw discreditable reflectfons on the political attitude taken up by the Star, and still to publish plenty of correspondence on both sides. However we huve hitherto attempted to publish each letter in turn, only allowing precedence to the shorter ones, and to those signed in the writer's own name. It will be impossible to continue to do this, unless political correspondents give us a few days' spell. Major Atkinson hopes to visit the district some time next week. Harry Laing, the Wanganui boxer, who has lately distinguished himseli by defeating Pettengell and Murphy, has offered to lay £30 to Jb"2o, and make a match with any man in Wellington, the affair to come off before the end ot the present month. Wo have received a copy of Russpll's Timetable and Guide to the Wanganui Exhibition. It is a useful and well got up Jui'ilee number of this rnjnlhly publication, and contains a clear and well executed map of Wanganni, and plan of the West Coast Exhibition. Mr. W. Middleton, of Opunake, writes as follows :—": — " Sir, — I see in your correspondent's report of the Opunako Dairy Factory meeting, that I am reported to have seconded Mr. Penoington's motion censuring the auditor. I wish to state that I neither moved nor seconded any resolution at, that meeting." It is reported that the Insurance Companies doing business in New Zealand have reiused to contribute towards the maintenance of fire brigades. Insurance Company's are taxed at Home and according to the London Fireman :—": — " Toward the expense of maintaining the Metropolitan Fire Brigade for the year 18S7, Shy-six companies, representing a business for the year 1885 to the amount of £7-19,074,000, will pay a tax of £26,000, being estimated at in round numbers of the rate of £35 per million. The Sun Office stands first on the list, with a business total of £79,210,000 in 1885, and a contribution of more than £2700, and the Essex and Suffolk Office last, having a business of £8800, and payiug Gs. There are nine companies paying over £1000 each, namely— Sun, Phoenix, Law, Comity, North British and Mercantile, Liverpool and London and Globe, Royal, Royal Exchange, and Westminster."
