AUCKLAND, June 14. With respect to the statement that the person who attempted to commit the robbery at the Free Library on Saturday night effected an entrance by an open -window, Mr. Covert, the assistant librarian, asserts that he is prepared to swear that every window of the library was securely fastened. KAIKOURA, June 14. William Makepeace, well known locally as a highly talented musician, has been missing since 27th May. Tbe assumption .that he was drowned has been confirmed by the right band and back and other bones of a human body being washed ashore here, and the remains are recognisable with tbe exception of the hand, which is quite denudtd of flesh. There is little doubt that the remains are those of the missing man, whose family is related to William Makepeace Thackeray. Quite a gloom has been cast over the plnce. Tbe poor fellow was somewhat dipsomaniac.

A natural curiosity has been discovered at Solotburn, Switzerland, the centre of a large watch manufacturing district. It is the nest of a wagtail, built wholly of long, spiral steel shavings, without "least the particle 01 vegetable or animal fibre used in its contraction. The nest has been placed in the Museum of Natural History. The committee appointed several months &RO by the Waimate Road Board to go through the accounts for a period of about six years have agreed upon a report to make to the next meeting of the board on the 29th inßt. The committee has had six or seven meetings, and the work has been arduous, but it is expected that, although the allotments can only be approximate, the board will adopt the report. Mr. Fyke Btates that he has instructed Mr. Travers, solicitor, to take legal proceedings against the Auckland telegraphic correspondent who sent out the personal paragraph which was made the subject of a threatened libel action. One of the Southern papers, which publiahed the par, on demand, surrendered the name of its correspondent, who, it is said, proves to be a journalist on the staff of the Auckland Star. The Taranaki Herald sayß :— What is regarded as an outbreak of diphtheria was reported at the Borough Council on Monday night. Mr. Bellringer, on behalf on the School Committee and the Board of Health, stated that every possible means were being „ taken taken to confine the present cases, which wera between Henui and Bell Block. He went on to say that the Health officer (Dr. O'Carroll) had suggested that the schools should be closed to, prevent the spread of the infection. If the number of cases materially increased the tohools would be closed at once instead of waiting for the midwinter holidays to begin;

A meeting of the directors of the Manaia Public Library was held on Saturday evening. Mr. Woodward, in the absence of the chairman, occupied the chair. It was resolved that a contribution of books, given by Mr. Dawson, be suitably acknowledged, and that be spent in the purchase of new books. Our Manaia correspondent writes : — " The Commissioner of Crown Lands, in a conversation on Tuesday, informed the clerk of the Waimate Eoad Board that he had received instructions to authorise the payment to the Local Bodieß of all interest ' thirds ' lately seized by the Government." This confirms the article, which was in type whet this newß came to hand.
