THE LONDON CIRCUS.
The London Circus opened lnst night in Hawera to a good houee considering the cold wet afternoon and evening. Probably fully four hundred persons were present. The most remarkable feature of the entertainment was unquestionably the excellent performance of Mr. W. Organ's Broncho borses. The auimals are neat well kept well bred useful hacks, of a stamp that New Zealand horsemen would gladly see more numerous in this colony. Untrammelled by saddle or bridle they pel form an inmense variety of|intneatß manoeuvres simply at the word oi command, each borse answering to his name, and ranging up alongside his mate, wheeling into single file, half sections, forming fours or six deep, as tbe order is given either to tbe troop or to tbe individual quadruped. The see-saw performance was a marvellous exhibition of perfect training. Perhaps still more extraordinary was tbe sight of tbe horse sitting in a trolly, driving a fast pair of bis fellow creatures, at a fall gallop, round a small circus ring. Tbe tour-legged driver bad to plant big hoofs with all bis force against tbe hoof-board, and lean over at an acute angle in order to counterbalance the centrifugal impetus evolved by tbe rapid motion. Mr. Organ manager his borses with firmness and kindness in a way which is sure to impress favorably anyone who knows bow our dumb servants ought to be dealt with in order to develop and train tbeir higher faculties. Tbe bare back riding and driving of six horses by Mr. A. Herbert was a magnifi* cent display. At times it seemed impossible for him to gather up the reins from six horses, drive two abreast, four abreast and finally six abreast; then to drive a pair, a unicorn, a four in hand and six in band team at will, he himself standing on the bare and slippery backs of two animals all tbe while. The ex. hibition was as good in its particular line as ever came under our notice. The joint exhibition given by Messrs. Herbert and Agielo, also a bare back per* fonnance was a graceful display of athletics, the figures being statuesque, the gymnastic feats neatly and gracefully executed with perfect fearlessness and with the utmost confidence, such as could only be obtained in such a trying, not to say dangerous position, by long training and by tbe utmost mutual confidence in each other's skill and muscular power and endurance. Signor Bartolo's performance as the boneless man has never been excelled in our presence during a pretty extensive thirty years occasional visiting expe* riencs of circuses. His neck must be made of limp leather, bis limbs of mas* cniar indiarubber to enable him to go through tbe marvellous contortions of limb and trunk shown last night. The way in which be passed his whole body through six hoop 9, they forming the skeleton framework of a perfect sphere, while be balanced a tumbler of water on his bare forehead throughout tbe maooi* uvre, must be seen to be believed. Tbe bail and barrel balancing performances by Mr. T. L. Herbert were well done, and elicited frequent applause. Want of space alone precludes us from doing justice to other meritorious features of last night's entertainment.
