WELLINGTON, April 19.
It is intended to ask Parliament to sanction a triennial division of profits of the Government Life Association instead of quinquennial, as at present. The Female Franchise Bill, to be introduced by Sir Julius Vogel and Mr. BalJance, contains only five clauses, and provides for females possessing (he same qualifications, rights, and privileges as males, and subjects them to the same disqualifications, disabilities and penalties. The date for the bill coming into operation, should it be passed, is left blank. Before the meeting of- Parliament, the resignation ~of Sir Win. Fitzherbert as Speaker, of the Legislative Council will be received,*and the Hon. Gr. M. Waterhouse will be Appointed to fill the vacancy. This course is rendered necessary owing to a .technicality, in the interpretation Act, which. does, not provide for on actingSpeaker' being appointed. During Parliament a bill will be introduced providing fq^/BUoh; an appointment. Sir W. Fitzherbert will resume the Speakership on hrs r return, to the colony. *"''£ *" v : PATEA, April 19. A store ; situated at Bedford- street, owned by -Mr. McGuire, of Hawera, and occupied by Bensley and Co., to be opened on the 23rd, was burned to the ground this" macaiag at 4wo o'ctoefc. Tfae fauiWingis of only little value, but the stock was., valued at £500, chiefly drapery, "crockery, and sewing machines. There is no insurance on anythirg so far as is known here. Through the active opera- , tions" of the fire brigade, ablj assisted by. a" few townsmen, tbe fire was confined to one building. The origin is a perfect mystery. The last light of any description in the building was on Tuesday last. AUCKLAND, April 19. ■ The prisoner Hall arrived from Christchurch this morning and was placed in Mount Eden gaol. It ia expected he will serve his sentence there. A. seven-roomed house in Cacaraftstreet, Parnell, belonging to the Grammar School and .occupied by Wm. Hudson, was destroyed by fire. The fire was clearly the work of an incendiary, but there isno trace of the offender. Hudson's loss is £500. Insurance is £240 in the North German Company. CHRISTCHURCH, April 19. Mark Tompkins, the landlord of the Royal Hotel, Woodland, which was closed ebme time ago by the Licensing Committee, has been fined £25 for sly grog selling.
