ATTACK ON A CONVENT.
The convent of the Augustinian nuns, Auxerre, was taken by assault a few days ago under peculiar circumstances. According to the account published by the Temps, Mdlle Gallet, only daughter of the Mayor of Egleny, was in the habit of " retreating " every year to this house, in which eke had been educated. This year she attained her majority, and instead of returning to her borne she wrote to her father announcing her intention of taking the veil. M. Gallet hastened to Auxerre, and tried, but in vain to Bee his daughter on several occasions. Finally, accompanied by his brother and several other relatives, he returned to the convent and demanded his daughter, but was assured that she was not there. He then forced his way in, opened a door, and a mob of 200 persons entered the building. The nuns continued to declare that Mdlle Gallet had left, but the whole house was ransacked until the young woman was discovered. M. Gallet walked away with his daughter, amid the applause of a crowd of 1500 persons. A demonstration was then made by the people before the chaplain's house, after which they dispersed. Such is the story told by the Temps ; but the Umvers and the Francais declare that Mdlle Gallet, who is twentytwo years of age, had repeatedly avowed ber intention of taking the veil, and they express the hope that she will be enabled to follow her own inclinations.
