[Per Pkess Association.] WELLINGTON, January 6. At the Supreme Court Davis was sentenced to one year for stabbing. There were 66 bankruptcies last year. 72 in 1885, and 39 in 1884. AUCKLAND, January 6. Captain Allman, of the Union Com* pany's Penguin, has invented a most valuable arrangement — signals for' the 1 prevention of collisions at sea. It is most simple in its working, and can be easily mastered in two minutes. A boy named Brierley, of Newmarket, while playing with a horae got his skull fractured, and is in a precarious condition. NAPIER, January 6. A fire broke out in a small house near the Catholic school, Shakespeare road, at 1 a.m. It was occupied by a 'family named Teehon as a boarding-bouse for laborers. The Lack of the dwelling wag discovered to be on fire by; a passer-by, who, failing to arouse the inmates, ran to the nearest firebell. The fire was confined to the one house. An entrance was soon effected, when the bodies ot two men, fearfully mutilate. l, were discovered huddled together." One was ' recognised as that of the proprietor, and the other of Kelly, a laborer. Both men bad been driuking over night. Te Kooti and mob passed through town to-day. ; • • , DUNEDIN, January 6. A rather serious collision occurred last eveuing between the steamer Omapere and the harbor board's big dredge. The Oimpere was on her way to Dunedin, and, when in the narrow channel between the qunrantine islands, she came* into collision with the dredge. The Omapere received considerable damage to her bows, the port bow being pierced right through in one place, 'and there are deep indentations in others.' The Omapere put back to Port Chalmers, where steam is being kept up in case ot her springiug a leak. The dredge is more seriously damaged, and she was brought to anchor undei Observation Point, where she gradually sank, and at latest advices appeared likely to become totaUyjSubmerged. The dredge was on her, way to sea with a full load of spoil. Her master declines to make any statement. A young man named Thomas Newton, aged 22, painter, was drowned while bathing in the sea at Ocean Beach. His parents Jive at Akaroa. He was a splendid swimmer. Mrs. J. Anderson, of Roslyu, reports her son uiissiug. As he was a pass^en^er by the Ttkapo, he is believed to be the man who fell overboard on Saturday.
