RAILWAY LAND COMPENSATION.
To the Editor of the Star. Sir, — I read Mr. E. Byrne'* letter, and confess his statements took me by surprise. Are we to believe that when land near Mr. Isaac Bayly's was paid for by the Government at the rate of £18 per acre, Mr. Bayly received several hundreds for less than an acre ? I absolutely refuse to believe, sir, that so scandalous a transaction ever took place on the mere unsupported ipse dixit of Mr. E. Byrne. I hope that Mr. Isaac Bayly, who, I feel sure, would be the last to take hundreds of pounds where he is entitled to less than a tithe of it, will write stating the real facts ; more especially as the transaction as stated by Mr. Byrne is as grave a reflection upon Major Atkinson's Government as the Stark scandal was (until explained) against the present Government. — I am, &c, Fair Play.
