WELLINGTON, May 18. Very little damage was done by the Rale. The railway traffic was interrupted for a time, but was quickly resumed when the weather cleared up. G. S. Graham and G. V. Shannon have been nominated for the directorship of the Government Insurance Association.
A telegram from Otaki states that Mrs. Sheath* wife of the postmaster at Tau> ranga, was drowned in the river yester day.
AUCKLAND, May 18. Archibald Cook, aged ten, was drowned whilst playing at the timber booms at Freeman's Bay. John Froßtdyke, who was seriously burnt at the fire at Borsbooms' boardinghouse, has died at the hospital. A verdict of death from a fall was returned on the body of the first victim, who is still unidentified.
A Maori woman has been burned to death at Kirikiri.
GISBORNE. May 10. The man named Neave— not O'Neill — died on Saturday from injuries received. In his dying depositions he swore positively that Roland shot him and struck him over the head with an axe. At the inqnest a verdict was returned of wilful murder against Roland. Roland was brought before the magistrate to-day", and remanded until Saturday.
CHRISTCHUJRCH, May 18. Steps are bemg taken to relieve the sufferers by the floods, many of whom have undergone great hardship. W. H. Davenport, formerly grocer here, cut his throat this morning. He had been unwell and low-spirited for a considerable time.
DUNEDIN, May 18. A verdict of accidental death has been returned on the two children burned to death at Mornington on Saturday.
NEW PLYMOUTH, May 18. An eight-roomed house in Gover-street, belonging to A. Boswell, was burned down at 1.30 this morning. The family escaped in their night-clothes, nothing being saved. The building was insured in the Standard office for £200 ; furniture in the same office for £150. Boswell has been extremely unfortunate, this being the third house he has lost by fire in the place.
