The Donedin big dredge has cost £60,000, including repairs, and is now useless because of the loss of tbe buckets. A steam line between Canada and Australia is among the latest proposals for extending commerce. Mr. Somerville has been re-elected chairman of tbe Wanganni County Council, and Mr. G. S. Robertson, chairman of the Waitotara Council. It is considered pretty : certain that an Auckland cricket team will make a southern tour during the holidays. Tbe matter is to be settled this evening. Captain Edwin -reports at 12.49 p.m. : Bad weather after sixteen hours from now. between north-east and north and west; jjlasß continue rising during next twelve hours, but then' fall. Mr. Walter B. Bishop, the President of the Ancient Order of Druids for the North Island, arrired in Hawera this afternoon to arrange for the opening of a branch of the Order which has been in progress here for the .past few weeks. ■; A man named William Ure was arrested at Normanby yesterday, on a charge of liavingbeen drunk and disorderly, and having resisted the police in the execution of their duty. He was brought up at the Court tbis afternoon. Messrs. Bate and Dive occupied the Bench, and disposed of the case. He was convicted on both charges, and fines aud costs amounting to £2 14s were ordered to be paid by him. It appeared from the evidence tbat the offence was connected with Mrs. Mills and her' bouse, and the Bench direoted tbe attention of the police to this house, as it ; seemedto be at tbe bottom of most of the cases brought from Normanby. Sergeant Anderson said be had the place in bis niiud, aud it was probable that proceedings would be taken at once. A curious complication is said to have arisen at Manaia. It appears that some time ago Mr. J. Nicoll, of Manaia, acting, it is said, under legal advice, reaumed possession of hia shop at Manaia. Mr. Geo. Fovßytb, lately manager there, obtained an order from the Judge of the District Court requiring Nicoll to give possession of the premises to Forsyth within three hours. This, however, was not done, further legal advice being taken on the point. On Tuesday it was understood that strong measures were to-be taken against Nicoll for contempt of court, but -till Wednesday at noon, nothing bad been done in the matter. We are not in a position to guarantee the accuracy of this version of the story, but it comes to us from an apparently reliable source, and we give it for what it is worth.
