NATIVE HAKAS.
The natives are now all retirin&Ciqt their homes after tbe hakaya^ PatfhafSJi but arrangements ' are ; being' iriade to hold others'* very ■ soon. One of the | biegestf seen on the. coast for a good while is to come off at Taiaporohenui next month, and others are likely to follow in various places. The natives do not seem very short of money, for it must cost a pretty good sum to keep < bhi* fun going. Large wh&ycß bave been ' abd are being erected afc various places. So far as we bave been able to learn' tbe preparations are leading up to a' progress down the coast by Titokowaru and bit people. The old chief has never come south of the Waiugongoro since he was chased to the Ngaire by Colonel Whitmore in 1669, after his fight at Otautu, near Patea, and the idea in contemplation seems to be a trip down the coast, which shall be accompanied by feasting and merrymaking as an indication that fighting is over and that peace reigns.
