Reward is offered for recovery of tv/o lost steers. The necessary repairs have now been effected to the firebell. We think the ; i brigade might arrange a code oi signals ' denoting the locality of fires. Captain Edwin reports :—": — " Wellington, 12.55 p.m. Every indication for further fall of glass, and after 12 hours hard gale from between north-east and north-west." The Waitara Press says the railway facilities to consignees and consignors are not what they should be on the local line. True beyond question. Only this week the transit from Waitava to Hawera of some packages consigned to this office occupied four days. Messrs. Nolan, Tonks and Co. hold their first sale at Opunake ou Thursday next. We need hardly say that this firm is well and favorably known, and that settlers around Opunake will find that business entrusted to Messrs. Nolau, Tonks and Co. is promptly and satisfactorily performed. Mr. Mitchelson, when at Woodville, commented strongly upon officials in any lands department speculating in Government lands, pointing out that their knowledge was obtained when working for the country, and had no hesitation in saying that, were a case of the sort brought before Government, the offender would receive his dismissal. " We (Napier Telegraph) have received numerous inquiries as to the whereabouts of Mr. Buchanan, M.H.R. for Napier, and an "Elector" in another column draws attention to the conspicuous absence of our representative during the visit of the Minister. for Public Works. We do not know what has become of Mr. Buchanan ; he may be in Sydney, or Wellington, or anywhere. All we do know is that he is a perfect stranger to Napier." Some of the electors should follow an example lately set in England, and advertise for their member in the " lost " column of the papers. The directors o£ the Okoia Dairj' Factory are to meet on Saturday afternoon in the Post Office Chambers at 1.30 o'clock. The manager, Mr. Thorne, will then exhibit sample cheeses of the 12, 30, and 601bs sizes. We learn that there are now about 9 tons of cheese manufactured, and the directors will consider the advisability of sending part of the lot Home as a sample. The piggeries are now nearly completed. They are very extensive, and have brick and concrete floors. The work (says the Herald) has been well done, and when finished, which should be in a week's time, the lessees, Messrs. Cummins and Noedl, will immediately place 100 pigs in for fatenning. They have at present nearly 300 pigs running in the paddocks. The Press says the amount of shipping done in Waitara last week was (as shown by returns) more than that done in Wanganui for the last six weeks — a very favorable comparison. Then, again, on an average, the railway returns for Waitara show that over fifty loaded trucks per day have arrived at and left tins place during the past -week. The chief export has been timber — 173,000 feet having arrived from up-country, of which the schooners Colonist and Awaroa, and the barquentine Waireka, took away the largest portion ; the Waireka took 80,000 feet to Sydney. Now that a direct connection by sea from Waitai a to Sydney has been established, the timber trade should flourish.
