NEWS AND NOTES.

Mr. John Gibson has been ve-elected Chairman of the Patea Harbor Board. Whakaruara householders having failed to meet to elect a committee, the Education Board has appointed Mr. John Scott, commissioner, as provided for in the Act. A recent issue of the Nelson Mail reports that a party were out boating, among -whom was Mr. Fred. Baddeley, well-known in Hawera, when the boat suddenly filled and sank. The party clung to tbe boat, and came off none tbe ■worse fov tbe ducking and fright, but they had a narrow escape. Yet another lawyer for Hawera. Mr. H. W. Kitchingham, of Greymouth, arrived in town last night, to practice in Hawera ; but we believe that Mr. Kitchingham is merely acting locum towns during the proposed absence of Mr. Caplen in the South Island, Mr. Caplen having decided to visit Greymouth on business for a week or two after the 20th of this month. The annual meeting of shareholders in the Hawera Building Society will be held this evening. The directors' report this year is as follows :—": — " The directors submit their report aud balance-sheet for the fifth year. The profits realised for the year amount to £303 4s. Id. This sum tbe directors recommend to be disposed ox as follows : — £249 14s. to the credit of subscribers and investors, which is equal to 10 per cent, per annum on the paid-up capital ; and £50 be carried forward to reserve account, leaving £3 10s. Id. to profit and loss account next year." A meeting of the committee in connection with the Church of England Bazaar was held yesterday afternoon, when there was a full attendance, some seventeen ladies and gentlemen being present. It was resolved to make a slight alteration in the date for holding the bazaar, Friday and Saturday, 18th and 19th April being fised upon instead of 17th and 18th. It was resolved to charge one shilling admittance, children half-price. It was reported that Messrs. C. M. Crocker and J. Duffill, members of the Vestry, had kindly promised to erect stalls, and choice of positions was drawn for by the various stall-holders. It was unanimously resolved that his Worship tbe Mayor should be asked to formally open the bazaar. It was reported that pretty well all expected goods had come to hand, and that the collection is an unusually varied aud valuable one. At the Hawera R.M. Court yesterday, Mr. John Winks was proceeded against for having neglected to alter a chimney said to be a dangerous chimney, of which notice had been given him under the by-law. The case for the borough as set forth by the town clerk, and testified to by several witness — Messrs. Duffill, Pinches, McCutchan, Duff — was that there was an iron chimney in a house belonging to defenlant, and that when there was a fire smoke and sparks were emitted from holes in this chimney, to the great danger of a building occupied by Mr. Duff. Such was the danger that no insurance agents were willing to accept a risk on Duffs premises, but one had relented so far as to agree to take a risk if the premium were 95Z- per cent. .' Mr. Barton, who appeared for defendant, said his client was quite prepared to re-, pair his chimney if he only kuew what he was required to do. Mr. Barton objected that the notice was bad, because it did not specify in what respect the chimney was defective, nor require the defects to be remedied within a certain time. — The Bench (Capt. Wilson aud Mr. Finlayson) adopted the learned counsel's view, and dismissed the case with costs.

The City of Nankin, the first grain ship of the season to leave Lyttelton, takes 58,810 sacks of grain.
