MANAIA.
(from our own correspondent.) The first and final dividend of 3a Bfd iv Charles Days' estate was on Ist April paid over to those entitled to preferential claims for salaries and wages. One man left his work to lift 7s sd. Another rode from Patea to get a dividend of £1 13s 6d. The net result is therefore iso wages for £270 claimed, and nil for about £1000 other claims. Au accident, which might have been attended with serious consequences, hap* pened to Mrs. H. Sinclair on Saturday evening. "Whilst trying to turn a horse away from her back door her foot got entangled in a rope which was around the horse's neck. The horse took fright and dragged Mrs. Sinclair about thirty chains, inflicting severe bruises, but doing no other harm. Mr. Thomas Lloyd has also been in tbe wars. He was lifting a bag of wheat on Saturday, and sprained his back very badly. He will have to keep in his bed for a while, as his medical adviser (Mr. Sutherland) says complete rest is necessary. The first meeting of players is called by the Chess and Draughts Club for Thursday (this) night, at the club's room. It is hoped that players residing a few miles iv the country will attend these weekly meetings of the club. A cordial invitation is given to all visitors. It is expected that an effort will be made here to raise funds to purchase a fire bell and a few ladders. An amateur entertainment is suggested as a source of amusement and profit. Certainly, some* thing should be done. If our Hawera friends wish to meet an appreciative and large audience for then! performance of Pinafore, let them come to Manaia. I'm sure their reception would be satisfactory. April 2.
