SPORTING.

♦ TARANAKI RACES. Second Day. The races to-day were again most successful, weather and other circumstances being most favorable. There was hardly such a large attendance as on the first day, but still the course was exceedingly well patronised, considering that the day was not a public holiday. The Volunteer Band was in attendance both yesterday and to-day, and supplied some enlivening music. The various booths were wellpatronised. The first day's racing having been so good, every confidence was felt by the public, who were induced to speculate their money very freely, there being little apprehension of any dark riding. The Derby was almost a failure, there being very little interest taken in it, as only three horses started, and the race was a gift to Consul. The club, we believe, have determined to discontinue the race after next meeting, as it has not been successful either from a monetary point of view or otherwise. Taranaki Derby, of 100 soys. For 3-yr.-olds. Colts, Bst. 101b. ; fillies and geldings, Bst. 51b. Distance 1£ miles. Mr. P. F. Tancred's b c Consul, 3yrs, Bst. 101b (Sutherland) 1 Mr. Wood's b m Ina, 3 years, Bst. 51b. (Williams) 2 Mr. O'Brien's eh g Guy Faux, 3 years, Bst. 51b (Edgecombe) 3 This race was looked upon with little concern, as it was considered that unless Consul fell half a dozen times the race would be a gift to him. Consequently there was little money invested. The result proved that these prognostications were well founded, as Consul led from start to finish, and was never collared, although in the straight Tna did her best. Totalisator dividend, £1 3s. Time— 2 mins. 51 sees. . . Handicap Hurdle Race, of 50 soys. Distance, 2 luiles, over 8 flights of hurdles. Mr. R. Hoskin's b g Billy-go-by- em, aged, 9st. 101b ... (Copestake) 1 Mr. J.
