The telegraph keeps us so well posted up daily with what is going on in Egypt that events of comparatively recent date soon seem long past. The defeat of Baker Pasha is one of them, but the following particulars, just to hand, should be interesting. The Standard's correspondent wrote on February 5 :—: —

Upon the evening of the 3rd instant our force, 8600 strong, encamped two miles from Trinkitat, the ground having been carefully chosen, and a vigilant watch being kept up all night against surprise! A few shots were from time to time fired into us, but otherwise the night passed quietly. The troops were paraded before daybreak, and at half-past seven the 300 baggage camels were laden and ready to move forward. The guns moved in advance of the column, the infantry following them, and the greater part of

the cavalry were" 'Seaftered- rouad in a circle of skirmishers, a balf-mUe^; or. so from the column, thfls dffeotfcelyTjnttteoting it from any- stttUJen allkcfe'. The Turkish cavalry , were' in reserve. The country was open* but scattered here ;and there were patches of sqrub and thorn, mimosa and other prickly shrubs, which should be at least as -impenetrable for naked savages as for well-clad men.
