HAWERA DAIRY FACTORY.
Mr. Maysmor has been canvassing the greater part of the country around Hawera to ascertain what support in money and cows the proposed factory might expect. As to money, the remit was most encouraging, promises of ample capital having been made. But the prospect of-obtain-ing sufficient milk to start the factory on anything like a large scale in or near the borough is a very poor one. Only one definite promise' was obtained, although the settlors, one and all, wished the movemeut every success. Two large owners of cattle are willing to let out a hundred cows each to persons willing to milk them, and another large owner will probably be milking a hundred well-bred cows himself, the greater part of the milk, however, being 'fed to the calves. Any surplus would be available for the.faptory. There appears to be a great scarcity of good milch cows around Hawera at present, a circumstance to be attributed to the low prices and uncertain sale obtainable for dairy produce in the past. One settler brought sixty good dairy cows to his holding a few years ago, but the then conditions of dairying were very discouraging, and the herd was disposed of. Two canvassers have been appointed for the Plains, to ascertain what support the movement may expect there, but their report is not yet to hand. The Wanganui people are sanguine as to the practicability of starting a factory in their district, and lately deputed a Mr. Wilson to go South' aud inspect the working of the system at the Flemington Factory. This factory is seven miles from the railway, and the ohief difficulty there met with at the start was the' scarcity of milk, graingrowing competing strongly with grazing in that district ; but the factory has now won its way, and the character of its produce is already well established. In this district, with its grand grazing capabilities, and the railway running right through it, the chances of success should be far greater than they were around Flemington, and we trust that the movement will not be allowed to drop. t '■
