BANQUET TO SIR JULIUS VOGEL.

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

An influential meeting of citizens was held to-day, to consider the reception of Sir Julius Vogel, who is expected on Friday. It was resolved to arrange for a banquet one day next week, to be fixed by Sir Julius Vogel ; also to invite Lady Vogel to be present and permit other ladies to take part.

The Eev. J. Allsworth's leoture on 11 Plymouth Brethrenism," was fairly woll-attended last night, and an interesting discourse was delivered. A special meeting of the Borough Council will be held at 10 a.m. to-morrow, when his Worship the Mayor will be duly installed in his office, being sworn before the council by the retiring mayor.

Nolan's sale to-day of properties in Captain Skeet's estate bidding was brisk, the prices realised being as follows : — 88ft. frontage to High-street, corner section, with blacksmith's shop, sold for Jl2 10s per foot to Mr. Furlong; the other sections sold as follows: — 33ft frontage High-street, £9 ss ; 40ft Unionstreet, lH 10s ; 40ft Union-street, £.% 7s Gd ; 40ft, Union-street, £2 7s Gd. ; 40ft, Union-street, i-2. The sale thus realised close upon £1100.

The soiree in aid of the school funds at Manaia will be held to-morrow evening. The ladies' committee have been very energetic in getting up the feast, and no doubt it will be thorougly enjoyed. After tea, the public will be admitted free, the prizes distributed, some music will be giyeu, and a pleasant evening is anticipated. A very handsome lot of school prizes have been obtained, thirty-five in all. The tickets of admission to the tea have been sold freely.
