NORMANBY.
THE SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS. The annual examination of the Normanby School was concluded yesterday afternoou by Mr. Foalis. The following is a statement of the results : — Standard V. Four presented, and all passed, viz : — William Quin, John Kobaon, Joseph Quin, and Henry Quin. Standard IV. Eight presented, one absent, five passed, viz. : — Annie Hunger, Blanche Riddle, Alice Gibson, William Robson, Jane King. Standard 111. Thirteen presented, three passed, viz. : —Clara King, Robo Gane, William Rye. The Inspector stated that the numerous failures in this Standard in no way reflected upon the teachers, as they were to be attributed to the fact that most of the children had been presented prematurely for Standard 1., the evil consequences of which were now seen. Standard 11. Twenty-one presented, one absent,
twenty passed, viz. :— Georgina Epping, Mary Casey, Eleanor Jenkinson, Emma King, Ellen Epping, Nellie Dockary, Mary McLachlan, Jasper Eiddle, Bertie BoAve, Alfred Quiu, George Hayward, John Hayward, Alfred Rye, Frederick Brown, Wm. Linn, Edward Einmerton, ■William George Gane, Charles Lichtwark, John Lichtwark, James Bedford. Standard I. Seventeen presented, one absent, sixteen passed, viz.: — Marian King, Rose HayAvard, Mary Sisley, Mary T. Quin, Annie Mantle, Robert G. Eagles, Frank Sisley, "William Brisco, James Casey, Harry Gibson, James McLachlan, .Wm. Kilvington, George Brisco, Wm. Mantle, Joseph Bedford, and Harry Sisley. At the request of Mr. Sisley, chairman of the school committee, the inspector consented to distribute the prizes, much to the gratification of the children. Annexed is the prize-list : — Good Conduct prizes. — Blance Eiddle and Joseph Quin. Regular attendance prizes. — Mary T. Quin and Frank Quin. Progress.— Clara King, Eleanor Jenkinson, Herbert Brown, and Wm. Brisco. Standard V. ; maximum, 470 marks. — Ist, William Quin, 3G4 marks ; 2nd, John Itobson, 329. The inspector paid a high tribute to Wm. Quin's ability and perseverance, remarking how unusual it was to find a boy only ten years of age in the fifth standard. Standard IV.; maximum, 470 marks. — Ist, A. M. Hunger, 319 marks ; second, Blanche Riddle, 307 ; 3rd, Alice Gibson ; 4th, William Robson. Standard lll.— lst, Clara King; 2nd, Roße Gane ; 3rd, William Rye. Standard ll.— lst, Jas Bedford ; 2ud, Ellen Epping ; 3rd, Mary Casey ; 4th, Alfred Quin. Standard I. — Ist, Harry Gibson ; 2nd, Joseph Bedford; 3rd, Mary T. Quin ; 4th, Annie Mantle. Prizes were also awarded to 10 children in the infant classes. It may be mentioned, as showing the difficulties with which the teacher has had to contend with, that there were on the roll at last examination 95 children ; the entrances during the year have been 72, and there have left 71, and there are at present on the roll 96. Thus it has been a continual " come and go " all the year.
