HAWERA ATHLETIC SPORTS.

Notes by Twilight. From the interest displayed by the members of the committee, and particularly that of its collector, Mr. W. Adamson, there is every likelihood of the meeting proving a success financially, as well as to the numbers and quality of tlie intending competitor. The programme presented by the committee, there can be no doubt, is superior to many issued in other places. There appears to be many well-known athletes already in active training on the cricket ground, amongst them, so far as I have seen and heard of, are — Messrs. Major, Dawson, Martelli, .'Harkness, Me* Niven, and Purdey (all local). • I have also heard that Mr. Lewis, of Manaia, is likely to take part in. the meeting. I shall expect to see a fine display of names on the night, of entry. , The committee are to be congratulated for having been so fortunate as to secure such a high figure for the right of booths on the ground during the meeting, and I sincerely hope that the enterprising speculation of Messrs. Hoskruge and P. Adamsou will prove remunerative. I also notice that the difference of opinion as to the amount to be paid to the Hawera Rifle Band for their services on ! the occasion has been amicably settled, and I sincerely hope that the greatest harmony will be displayed on the day of the sports. I notice that at the time of the sale of the booths, there was nothing said about the •• correct cards." It is to hoped that they are not to be omitted from the meeting, a3 they generally prove a great convenience to the public. I hope the committee will talk the matter over, and issue the cards if possible. It will now depend on the handicapped — Messrs. W. Adamson, J. Hood, and McLdowie to fulfil their important part of tiie duties, by following out the old style of handicapping. If any person enters, whom they know nothing about, keep him well in hand ; and no doubt the Hawera athletic sports' meeting of New Year's Day, 1883, will prove one of the best ever held in Hawera. Hawera, Dec. 14.

We remind settlers of the stock sales to-morrow — Messrs. Homer's in the morning, Messrs. Nolan's in the afternoon, at Manaia ; and Mr. Jackson's, at Waverley. " When found, make a note of, Captain Cuttle." Who is there that does not know the use of a Diary H H. I. Jones and Son have just opened up their stock of Letts' Diaries, aIJ sizes und prices. "By thy diligence so shalt thy success be." Our stock of School Prizes is now ready for inspection. Chatterbox, Little Polks, and all the serials are now ready. Why borrow a prayer book every Sunday when you can buy one for a mere trifle. A' large stock of Prayer and Hyuin Bv.oks of all denominations on sale by H. I. Jones and Son. — Ad. I understand there is a large area of land in this district under crop .'this season. I would, therefore, remind fArmers that the cheapest and quickest way of harvesting them is by a Deering Tfwlne Binder.. I^havo still a few undisposed or, and the price is JE6S f .o.b. Wanganui. I have always a good stock of extras on hand. I hope the farmers of this district will pay me a visit, and inspect the largest stock of agricultural iu> plements on the coast, comprising Duncan's 2 and 3.furrow ploughs, whioh have taken first prize two years running at the Wanganui show, Reid and Gray's ploughs, horse hay rakes, hay makers, horse-powers with intermediate motion, winnowing machines, chaff cutters, turnip cutters, harrows, &c. My stock of turnip, swede, and clover seeds have just arrived, ex Mercia, and open up splendidly. They may be relied upon as being new, and true to name. Before purchasing anything for your farm, compare my prices. K. C. Holcbopt, Victoria Avenue, Wanganui.— Advt.
