TARANAKI RACES.

(from our special reporter.) BACECOUBSE, This Day. The day is very pleasant, but up to the present the course is not well patronised. The arrangements are throughout very primitive, but this is partly accounted for by the difficulty which the club have had in obtaining a lease of the ground. The races are generally considered to be of a very open character. For the Spring Handicap, Fishwoman, Larry, and St. Clair, are about equal favourites, but Scotch Mist has also many supporters. For the Handicap Steeplechase, Fungus and New Year were most fancied, but the difference in weight carried was very great. A start was made with the Steeplechase at about 12.30; distance, about 3 miles, over a very stiff course. Five started. New Year 1 Dianthus 2 Larrikin 3 A good race. New Year fell at the first gorse fence, but the rider soon mounted, and joined the others. In the second round, New Year again stumbled at a gorse fence. Fungus jumped badly, aud ran unkiudly throughout. Totalisator, £119; £48 on winner; £25 on Fungus; only £14 on Dianthus. New Year's win was very popular. Spring Handicap. Crocker's St. Clair (under protest) ... 1 Pollock's Larry 2 Owen's Satoria 3 A good race throughout. Satoria making the pace throughout the first round. Passing the stand first time, all the horses were well together, and there was little to choose betweeu them. On reaching about half way round the second time, Biugleader was called upou, but did not respond. Larry and St. Clair closed up when near i the straight, and a good race finished in favor of St. Clair by about three lengths. The protest against St. Clair is on the I ground that his age is five, not four, years. The protest was made before the race. There was £221 in the totalisator, and fifty-four on the winner; eighty-four on Larry. The win was popular, and the horse won gamely. Novel Hack Bace. Cutfield'sAda ... • 1 Telfar's Misfortune 2 Ouranoutang 3 Out of forty-nine in the totalisator, only seven wrre on the winner.
