NELSON, This Day.
At the inquest on the fatal fire, the evidence showed the woman to have been drunk. Win. Norton, her husband, deposed that between his naps he heard what he thought to be the woman going upstairs into where was a loft. Deceased was in the habit of 6moking, and when drunk was continually lightiug her pipe. On a constable reaching the scene of fire, he asked Norton the whereabouts of his wife, and he said she was ou the hills, but subsequently said he remembered her to go upstairs. The constable said, "Then she is burned?" and, in reply, Norton said, " And a good job, too." Norton, however, denies this. The jury brought up the following verdict :—": — " The jury is of opinion that the deceased, Margaret Nortou, died from the effects of burning while in a drunken state ; and that they strongly censure her husband, William Norton, for not having made known the fact that he had seen her go upstairs, aud not having made any effort to save her." The coroner called the man before him, and gave him a lecture.
