Mr. Mackay received the deputation very cordially, and. explained how anxious he was ,to further the objects of the deputation in every way. ( The difficulty, however, was this; that portions of certain reserves were already leased by the natives to - private individuals, qnd until those •leases, if there were any on this reserve, had' been' confirmed, or the reserve declared'clear of leases by the "West Coast Commissioner, he (Mr. Mackay) could not deal with it. Matters having been talked over, the deputation thanked Mr. Mackay for the courteous reception and frank explanation given.
