MANAIA TOWN BOAED.
A special meeting of the Town Board was held last evening, to consider the schedule of proposed works, which had to be approved before striking a rate. Present — All the members, Mr. A. E. Langley in the chair. The works committee — consisting of Messrs. Jackson, McCarthy, and Sinclair — brought up their report as follows, showing a proposed expenditure of £121 10s. :— 1. Formation of Main-street, full width, from O'Brien's to Bauk of New Zealand £35 0 0 2. Drain to take water from centre of town 10 0 0 8* Part formation of Ban-couri-street; from Main-street to Tirau-street 8 0 0 4. Part formation of Tiraustreet to Manaia road 20 0 0 5. Culvert on Patukupa-st.,, to enable children from N.W. of town to attend school ..* •5 ■ 0 0. 6. Gravelling Main-street ..'. 37 10 0 7. Engineering 11 0 0 £121 10 0 The Board generally approved of the. report, and an estimate of probable income and expenditure -was entered into, aud it was estimated that after providing for all liabilities, there would be a balance available from all sources of 'about £80 prior to March 31. The Chairman stated that he thought it would be necessary in any case to interview the bauk, so as to provide for the funds to carry on the work without further delay- It was estimated £bat the total expenditure would amount to £153 10s, thus leaving a balance of £80 un- ( provided for. Mr. Jackson explained that several of ' the works would not be requued to be done until near the beginning 1 of winter, so that practically the work would be done within the next financial year. The Chairman did not anticipate any difficulty with their bankers ; and even if there were any objection it might be negotiated in some other way. Mr. Days questioned the accuracy of the estimates prepared by the committee ; ( be asked -what authority the committee had on which to base their estimates. Mr. McCarthy said that the engineer had estimated the cost of the main street, and as to the vest of the works they had ' had other similar works done near the town, the cost of which they had to guide them. The Chairman moved that the worksreported on by the committee be approved by the board, and that the estimate be publicly notified ; the intention of the board to strike a rate of Is. in the £ be also notified, and that the ' committed interview the bank with a view to-.obtain-ing an overdraft to carry on the works proposed, and report at next ordinary meeting. Mr. Days thought both banks should be interviewed, and protested against the resolution. The resolution was then put and carried* i Mr. Jackson stated that the A.C. were prepared to stfttt v/ovk on the main road on Monday next. ■ i Mr. Days having objected to any direction being given to the committee,' it was agreed to excise the portion relating to interview by the banker. It was reported that Mr. Jackson was duly elected Chairman of the Works Committee. The Board then adjourned.
