CRICKET.

♦ The opening cricket match of the season was played at the Hawera ground on Saturday. It had been arranged that the first eleven should play 22, but both sides were short and played oto 19. The 19 went to the wickets first, but made a very poor show against the bowling of Southey and Riddiford, the latter of whom was very destructive. Fowler and Partridge were the only two who got into double figures, registering 13 each. The bowling of the larger team was almost as weak as their batting, Goodson alone showing any form ; and Cunningham, Moore, and Riddiford treated it unmercifully, scoring 25, 54, and 80 respectively. Ranson scored 15 aud Parrington 14. The total was 160, as against 44 made by the 19.
