NGAIRB ROAD BOARD.
(FROM OUR. OWN, CORRESPONDENT.) | 1 The'ordlhary monthly meeting of tlic atypvc board was held, on Monday, the 7th 1 inst. Present—Messrs. M.irchant (chairman), Qodfein, Harm,. Sanders, McKay, Sparkes, and Taylor. . 6*PUNAKE RdAD.' ' " \ Messrs. W. Malone, A. Malone, and J. ■ Richardson waked on the board to ask that a slim 6t money should b^set^ide, for expenditure on Opunake road. The deputation pointed out that the board deipved .a considerable revenue from deferred payment sections on the road, and "quoted figures to shrift the funds' yearljravailable from that road and from thelCardift road. The Cardiff road, they. BaicJ, had been highly improved, and in fact] it could not be made better except! byjerrvelling ; and they now asked tba't the board would impound all money, accruing, from the Opunake road, so that in the event of no further Government asbißtanco being forthcoming, a culvert ' and some draining and' gra veiling" might be done, bo as to make gbod>a bad pjaca about twenty chains in length. They would not bo content with, any thin'g less than a resolution of the board to impound the money until the end of the present financial yeaz% The board, could not consider the l'cqucsi reasonable. • 'Mitch' ■ work had . already been done by Government ontho road, and a £200 qonti/act for stump* ing it and for grading was still under the ranger's control. It seemed undesirable to interfere with the road under the circumstances, and the request of the deputation , could not bo granted.. That one piece of twenty chains would absorb tho whole revenue of the , block. The board wokld, however, give the deputation tbis assurance, that if, when the present 'contract was' completed, »it was found that Government couldf'nbt be induced to do anything more : to tbe road, the board would do all in, its,. power to make good, the. said bad place (one of many) before next winter. 'The deputation' was understood toliint at an appeal to the Land, Board, and then withdrew. '"- f ' THE WBW SAW-MILL. Applications were read from Duncan Bros., p,skipg for permission to lay a tramway 1 along the side of Oheal road, and across tho Mountain road.' t Proposed by Mr. Godkin, seconded! byMr. Harm, and carried, " That the board grunt the applications', and that Messrs, Godkin, Sanders, and Taylor be a coriinuttce to direct where tbe tram shall be laid." ' " ' ' " ' jKEYENBURCL'S BRIDGE. A letter was read from Mr. C. H. Meyenburg informing the board that he" found himself unable to erect the bridge on Bird rqad which, ho had last year agreed to build for, ££0, as it would cost twice that sum. He had, howcver.erectcd a substantial foot bridge, and would like 'to bo' paid for' it. Th'e> foreman beiri^ asked 'how tb» bridge was built, said that" a log had been chipped down and some slabß nailed /on it. (Laughter.) Mr. Hann,.! in. anawer to a question, said tbat there were no settlers beyond - the applicant's at prcsen^but he Ucard that some were going on to their land presently. The Chairman said that 'Mr. Meyenburg had given the board a lot of work last year, and tho board had gone a long way out of its road to try and bcuvo him. He, had now, however, infdrmed them that he did not intend to build the cart bridge. This was showing the board very little consideration. i ' Mr. Godkin moved, "That the board cannot entertain the application, and . tbat settlers must; in all cases ask leave of the board to execute work if they wish it to be paid for." Seconded, by Mr. Taylor, and carried. Two ratepayers wrote to eay'that they would forward their rates if informed of the amount. The clerk was directed to let them know the amount, and also the cost of the summonses, and to advise, them to make their peace with the Clerk of the Court at once, or there would be the cost of service to pay also. ' COUNtT RATES. , Messrs. Want, 'Taylor, Dow, and Sandors complained. to the .county members 1 preßeut of very defective, arrangements for receviug the rates at Hawera. Two of Ibemhttve-bauto wait for hours before being able to pay, and two had not yet been able to pay tbeir's, although- they hndgouo three, tunes with, tho money. They would jo obliged if the Chairman would take the money ' ' ' ' The Chairman said', although tbe matter, was not exactly. Within the scope of the Board, he thought the complainants had a right, to be heard, and no doubt the press would publish their remarks. DEVIATION CORRESPONDENCE. ' , The Board approved ot & reply sent by tho Chairman to the Waste Lands Board, on the subject of some deviations. . FINNEBTY BOAD. Mr. W. Taylor waited on ths Boar.d to express hid dissatisfaction at tho small amount allotted to this road. He did not think justice had been done to it np to the present, and considered that, (he Board -. «Uould have acquainted- itself- with the, amount accruing from the laud . Inorder to clear the matter up, all the schedules were 'examined, and the facts were fouud to be, that ss. Bd., had been -received, ami .£250 10s. expended up to date, leaving the road £18 in debt at
presentr "Memjbers .generally— howeve^ ( seemed to thmVtliafc' the road had notj been treated too liberally, and resolved .tliht tile sunxlof iEßO'be'afiQefJ to l\ik£26 already allotted, if the Board receives sufficient, funds fiflna t tbe road tot {justify, the expenditure. , ' sole boad,. i .-, . It was reported that Mr. R. E>aker Was so disappointed with' the'aiponnt allotted, that Tie had abandoned the idea of settling on his land at present. " ••• ' Mr. Sands moved that £15 additional be voted, although he must admit that the road would be a good 'one whence work ! scheduled bad., been, jexeculjed... , ' ' The Board rejected the motion in favor* of the following: " That the Board -will from time -to, ,*^me ( during the year take' into consideraition aW jeases, of r appar6nt hardsm-p, and -will rededy them aslaras its funds will-allow;'*'- • ' ACCOTTNTS PASSED. .-'StorerV 'Mlrlßa fid. :>'-McCari£y,, £8 95. ; Ralfe,' £X Us;* .Marchant, £2 25.,;. Kenworthy, fllOs. Mr. ganders moved, ;,." Ijiat the clerk" post np the amount accrued' from each rood up-to^he present time,, and also the ainounfexpended. '' ' ' ! Lapsed for want- of a seconder ;, dne 1 member remarking that a clerk at £100 ayear would be wanted. As showing the of the roads at' present,' Mr, Harm casually remarked during the 'meeting, that if the Bird Road drain were only widened a little it would make a- capital : cabal, and .would be far preferable to what was sup Dosed to be the ro^* ' ! - >: • Tr '-~ - ;/ :
