Pressure on our space compels us to hold over a number of letters to the editor and other interesting matter. The directors of tho Wellington Frozen Moat Export Company have, by cable, ordered the most improved machinery from England, which is expected to arrive in time to commence operations by next summer. A ball is to be given by tho A.C. at Fort Manaia to-night, in honor of the opening of the new barrack-room there. There is overy prospect of the dance being a great success : the hosts on the occasion have spared no trouble in preparing for the entertainment of their guests. The regular monthly meeting of the Hawera Masonic Lodge, No. 652, S.C., was hold at the Town Hall last night. Bro. H. G. Pitcher, R.W.M., presided. One brother was raised ; after which the j question of building a lodge-room was brought up. The secretary stated tha 1 1 an additional £10 had been subscribed fjince last meeting. It was resolved that Bros. J. Smith, Kempthorne, and Miller's names be added to tho committee, and that they should have plans drawn up, and endeavor to obtain a suitable section for tho building forthwith. The annual sitting of the Licensing Committee of the Otoia District was held on tho 7th inst., in the Kakaramea Town Hall. Present, George Gane, chairman, Messrs. R. B. Pearce, Brodie, Clover, and Wilson. Applications were received from William Gallagher, Manutahi Hotel, from Daniel Hurley, Woodville Hotel, and James O'Sullivan, Kakaramea Hotel, all of which wore granted. The committee ordered that the proprietors of hotels with upstairs departments, furnisb before the next quarterly meeting, rope ladders, so as in case of fire and the staircase being on fire, to afford persons a means of escape. The clerk was instructed to write to the various chairmen to the following effect: — That tho committee request the Government to .appoint an analyst, and that a conference of the chairmen of the variotts districts, viz., Manaia, Hawera Road and Borough, Otoia, Patea Borough, and Waverley districts be held at Patea to endorse the action taken by this committee, as the committee is of opinion that it would be beneficial to the whole district. On Wednesday evening last, a special | meeting of the Hawera Sohool Committee was held, at which were present — Messrs. Pitcher, McFarlane, and Hobbs. The meeting had been called principally to consider a letter received from the Board, recommending the application of Ambler Woodward, as a pupil-teacher to the Hawera School. The committee resolved that the application be confirmed. The account of Mr. H. Way, for removiug desks, was referred back to Mr. Way. The committee decided to increase the emolument of the school caretaker to the extent of 40s. per annum. Tho chairman was instructed to provide fuel for the school, also to cause certain alterations in the chimneys to be effected. The subject of the non-appointment of an assistant teacher by tiie Board, occupied the attention of the committee, the members present expressing surpriso at receiving no communication from the Board, which body had been written to more thau once on the subject. The proceedings then terminated. The creditors in the estate of J. A. Petherick held a meeting yesterday at the office of Mr. J. McCutchnn, trustee in the estate, for the purpose of considering a lettor received by the trustee from Mr. Hamerton, solicitor for Mrs. Petherick, of which the following is a copy : " Sir, — On behalf of Mrs. Petherick, I am instructed to make tha following offer, without prejudice. Sho will be willing to give up her house j and the section of land, in consideration of her receiving all the real, personal, and mixed assets of her husband, present and future, and passing a resolution recommending his immediate discharge." After considerable discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Dixon, seconded by Mr. Pulford, that the offer bo declined. Mr. Hamorton, who was present, stated that his client would make no further offer to the creditors. The trustee stated that he was in a position to assert that the house claimed by Mrs. Petherick was erected with £'200 which had been given her by her husband, who had obtained it from a Government contract; aDd he further remarked that the debtor had given a cheque for i'4o, for the balauce of Miss Petherick'e piano. The meeting then adjourned.
A scratch football match will be played on tho cricket ground to-morrow, when all members of the Clnb are requested to attend, and visitors of sound wind and limb are invited. The eleotion of five commissioners for the Opunake town district resulted in the return of Messrs. J. H. Newman, W. Pottigrew, A. Anderson, E. C. Middleton, and E. L. Smith. At the E.M. Court yesterday, before Captain Wilson, J.P., Robert Carson, an old offender, was fined 20s. and 7s. costs, for having been drunk and disorderly. Prisoner elected to go to gaol for 48 hours, in default. It is scarcely necessary to remind our readers of the entertainment which will take plaoe this evening, at the Town Hall, in aid of the funds of the Hawera Recreation and Improvement Club, the members of which with commendable anxiety are desirous of starling what shall form the nucleus of a good library. In addition to a number of talented, musical, and dramatic amateurs, ■ Mr. Clapcott has promised, if possible, to contribute one of his popular readings. Something approaching a mutiny has broken out on board H.M.S. Miranda, at Wellington, in consequence of the shore picket duty having been transferred from the marines to tho seamen. A night or two ago, on a picket landing, two of the -men threw their belts and side-arms at the feet of their officer and refused duty, their messmate looking calmly on and refusing to arrost them, which duty was performed by the police. Tho mutineers will be court-martialled. Nominations were received to-day for the Ecven seats at the Hawera Road Board, rendered vacant by the Act. The following gentlemen were nominated : — James Morrison, Donald Buchanan, W. Wallace, D. McLean, W. Broderick, D. Williams, H. W. Foreman, J. Crocker, and G. McLean. The elections will take place at the State School House, Hawera, on Saturday, the 17th inst. The official advertisement in connoction with the elections will appear in Monday's issue. During the recent surprise visit of the Inspector, that official entered the following memorandum upon tho minute book of the Hawera sohool: — "The mnster continues to exercise over this school the excellent moral influence which those acquainted with him would expect. The whole tone and appearance of the children are highly creditable. With the additional school places provided, this school will be likely to make more progress than it as ever yet exhibited, notwithstanding its former high character. (Signed) R. Foulis, Inspector" The special correspondent pf the Taranaki Herald says :—": — " The Auckland and Taranaki members have unanimously agreed to support the line of railway from Te A. wamutu to Waitara, as against the line from Cambridge to Palmerston, via West Taupo. A committee appointed to enquire into the case has reported that the line via Mokau ia.-the beet one on account of the shortness 61 the line, and consequently less cost ; also, that the land is better and the mineral wealth great ; that in regard to native difficulties, they are no more likely to be encountered along the Mokau route than the other. The whole of the members of both districts will probably wait on the Government at an early date to urge these views, and that an appropriation be made, and the work commenced during the recess, in the event of the House deciding that a loan be raised. The creditors in the estate of Daniel Kelly, carrier, Manaia, held a first meeting, on Wednesday afternoon, at the Court-house, Hawera. The liabilities amounted to £281 Is. 6d., and the assets to £108 Is. 6d. The liabilities were nearly all for small trade accounts, owing |to storekeepers, &c., in Auckland, New Plymouth, Oinata, .Stratford, Inglewood, Ngeure, Normanby, Manaia, and Hawera. Causes of insolvency were alleged to be fosses on contracts, sickness of debtor, and general bad luck during the past six months. Mr. Meredith, from Mr. Hammerton's office, appeared for the debtor. The principal assets consisted of a lease of a section at Waimate, valued at j£6o, six working bullocks valued at .£54 ; the balance of the assets consisted of small book debts. The largest creditors were Langley Bros, £40 ; Isaac Days, £'20 ; I Humphries and Son, £11 ; and George Capper, £14. Mr. Matthews was appointed chairman. It was elicited from the debtoi th&t against the assets there were contra accounts, which would have the effect af reducing the assets materially. Mr. Langley having been appointed trustee, with -power to acoept any offer for the estate, or wind it up, the meeting closed.
Freeman R. Jackson will hold his usual monthly 6tock 6ale at the Manaia ealo yards on Friday next, 16th inst. Thirteen nominations having been made for tho Ngairo Road Board, the election for seven commissioners will take placo on the 15th inst. G. and F. Homer will sell by auction, at Manaia, to-morrow, consignments of fruit trees, flowering shrubs, wheelbarrow, hurdles, &c. Mr. Murray Thomson will sell a consignment of fowls, at Mr. Nolan's rooms, tomorrow. The annual general meeting of the Hawera Institute will be held this evening, at 7.30. A general mooting of the membors of the Hawora Cricket Club will be held at Cook's Hotel, to-morrow evening, at 7 o'clock.
