OPUNAKE.
(from our own correspondent.) We have recently had very large shipments of goods landed here, both from Auckland and "Wellington, which is a very good indication of the growing prosperity of our township. Buildings are rapidly being erected ; and on your next visit you will I am sure, be favorably impressed with Hie-head-way we are making. I notice the Bank of New Zealand has changed its cite toopposite Middleton's Hotel, where a good substantial building has been erected by Mr. E. L. Smith on his own property. Messrs. Middleton's Telegraph Hotel is fast approaching completion, and when finished will be an ornament to the town, and will be found replete with every comfort for travellers visiting here. Mr. Crowther has also under construction a building for a general store; and Mr. Moore is also building in the same locality, which i 3 very favorably eitoated. On the Queen's Birthday our Volunteers mustered and fired a feu de joie, #fter which tbree cheers were given for her Majesty, when the corps proceeded to the rifle range to compete for three prizes, viz., a cross, silver, cup, and timepiece. I fear giving a description of the designs would occupy too much space, but I may flay they have been neatly executed. The winners of the respective prizes are — Vol. M. Stevenson. Sergt.-Major A. Stott, and Vol. Edmunds. The latter gentleman has only recently settled here, and belonged to Nelson. I am sure his volunteer Mends on the other side will be glad to hear of his success. After the firing, a theatrical entertainment ' was given by our very energetio amateurs, which was indeed \ great success. The proceeds amounted to over £28, which look well for Opunake. At the close of the performance, nearly all proceeded to the Drill Hall, where a ball was held \ and with great spirit dancing was kept up until about daylight. It baa been ac•knowledged that never bef&rein Opunake wen assembled so many people. Our caterer, Mrs. Ewttw, admirably performed her dutie* in attending to the wants of the dancers. The oronestva was com* posed of Messrs. Albert Cdster, Hopwood and some of the A.C.'b Band, whose names lam not acquainted with, lam sure all present were thoroughly pleased with their evening's enjoyment.
