WELLINGTON, May 30.
An inquest was held into the circumstances connected with the destruction of McCarthy's store by fire, at Masterton, on Friday last : and a verdict was returned that there was no evidence to show how the firo originated.
CHEISTCHUECH, May 27.
Yesterday morning a boy found a dirty scrap of paper-on the river bank near Stanmore bridge, with the following written on it in pencil : — " Near Stanmore bridge, about 100 yards on the new bridge side, you will fiud my dead child, as I put it inside the river last night with a stone round its neck, and it sank. From a broken-hearted mother. Signed, A.M." The police are searching for the body, but it is believed the affair is a boas.

Last week the promoters of the West Coast railway received a telegram from Sir Julius Vogel, in reply to one sent to him some little time ago on the subject of the construction of that line. The reply was a favorable one.
GISBORNE, May 29.
The session of the Native Lands Court has nearly ended. The judges were entertained at a public dinner on Saturday. Hopes are generally expressed that the Native Minister will authorise the prolongation of the session to suit the public wants, as many applications are still unheard, and Judge Brookfield will remain here.
AUCKLAND, This Day. It is stated that a party of Kingiteg have started making a road to Tuhua (upper Wanganni), and intend carrying it through the King country to Alexandra.
A son of Daniel Calley, of Pakerimu, has been horribly gored by a boar, ripping both legs almost from the knee to the thigh, and completely ripping open the bowels.
Thomas Lynch, who was thrown from his horse at Coromandel, died of concussion of the brain.
The famous chief Tukukino has arrived in Auckland. He is a witness for the defence in the cases of Epiha and Pukara. He has not visited Auckland since 1847, when he camo to see Rauparaha, who was brought here by H.M.S. Calliope as a prisoner.
GREYMOUTH, This Day. Mr. Mountfort, formany years telegraph officer in charge here, who has been ordered to Wanganui, was on Monday night presented with a purse of sovereigns by the citizens, and with a complete set of Thackerry's works by his iellow officers of the department.
TIMARU, This Day. Tho hull and sails of the ship City of Perth were sold at auction for £850.
The Union Steamship Co. haye forwarded a cheque for £50 on behalf of the Oamaru relief fund. An amateur entertainment last night in aid of the fund realised £60.
An inquiry to the wreck of the City of Perth was held yesterday bofore tho Collector of Customs, but no fresh particulars were brought out.
OAMAKU, This Day, Neil Mcßee, the man who was hurt by the railway accident near Kartagi on the night of the 23rd, died in the hospital last ni^ht, after suffering fearful agonies. His dying depositions wero taken yestorday afternoon.
DUNEDIN, This Day.
Te Whiti wants to see the gold-digging operations, and will visit some of the goldficlds for that purpose.
Te Whiti and Tohu have gone to Invercargill this morning.
This Day.
Te Whiti and Tohu were shown over the Daily Times printing office and the Mosgiel Woollen Factory yesterday. Visiting cards were printed off for them at the former place. In the railway yard Tohu was allowed to drive a locomotive, and blow tho whistle.
INVERCARQILL, This Day.
At the Police Court tbis morning Win. Tate, late clerk in tho local goods department at Invercnrgill railway station, was charged with embezzling the monies of the Government, and was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court ; bail being refused on the ground that he had been taken in the act of absconding. One of tho witnesses stated that Tate, through whose hands largo sums of money passed weekly, was in receipt of only £110 per annum ; and it further transpired that no regular audit of the books in his charge had been made since Fob. 14, 1881.
