WELLINGTON, This Day. The writs for Franklyn North and Wakanui have been issued. The election takes place on the 9th June, and the writs are returnable on or before the 30th June. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The attendance at the Exhibition up" to Saturday night was 117,478. 234 entries have been received for the mid-winter show on Thursday, got up by the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Over 10,000 persons visited the Exhibition yesterday. AUCKLAND, May 22. In one of the city schools 600 children are absent in consequence of measles, and in another 250. When arrested at Adelaide, Harjes asked if he could not leave £200 with his solicitor to settle matters as he wished to proceed to England. Pakara and Epiha were brought up at the Police Court to-day on a charge of shooting at Daldy McWilliams with intent to kill. They were remanded till the 31st to give time to get the necessary witnesses. They were forwarded to Mount Eden Gaol handcuffed to each other, by way of precaution. A boat is missing at Coromandel, containing Thomas Warner and son and Daniel Ballantyne. The boat was considered unseaworthy. A youth named Longbottom was thrown from his horse, and had his skull fractured. This Day. During the passage of the steamer Fingal, a gum-digger named Sayers, who came aboard drunk, fell overboard, and was drowned. BLENHEIM, This Day. A digger named Samuel Ballard committed suicide in Onamatutu Valley on Sunday. The following letter was found in his pocket-book : — " My dear friends : lam heart-sick of this world. I cannot live in it any longer. My energy is exhausted. I crnnot work. I cannot rest. There is one that knows why. Good-bye a 11. —5.8." INVERCARGILL, This Day. Alfred Harper has been committed for trial for stabbing a man named Steenmair. Smoke has. been observed on the ridges near Easy Harbor, on the West Coast of Stewart's Island, and it is thought that some of the crew of the missing ship Minydon may be cast ashore there. A four-roomed cottage in the suburb of Stratheaone, owned by D. Fairweather, and occupied by Mr. Pennefather, was burned down yesterday. The building was insured for £100, and the furniture for £150, the latter in the Colonial office. The adjoining building, owned by E. Rogers, was considerably damaged, but loss is covered by insurance in the Hanseatic Co. DUNEDIN, This Day. At the Vblunteer gathering last night, a resolution was carried requesting Col. Stavoley to call a public meeting of Volunteers and citizens to consider the advisability of having the next meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association held in or near Dunedin. The stock train going north with sheep, early yesterday morning, was thrown off the line by the engine striking a stray horse, near Shy Point Junction. The engine was just crossing the bridge^hen it went off, and it smashed the bridge considerably. Fifteen wagons filled with sheep ran off, and many of the sheep were killed and a number injured. The engine turned completely over. The driver was thrown twenty-five yards ahead of the engine, and escaped unhurt ; the fireman, however, landed amongst some debris, and it was two or three hours before he was found, badly bruised and scalded. The line was blocked for some hours. TIMARU, May 23. The Harbour Board have voted one year's salary, £300, to the wife of tho late H arbour Master.
