WAIMATE ROAD BOARD.
Saturday l May 18. The. Board met at 2.30 p.m. PresentMessrs. Dingle, Sutherland, Young, and Yorke, chairman* PALMER ROAD. A bush ;settler waited on the Board relative to opening up the Palmer road. Mr. Young moved that 120 chains of Palmer road be let to be cleared under the usual conditions. Seconded by Mr. Sutherland and carried. The contract not to be issued until authority had been given by the commissioner. WAINGONGORO BRIDGES. A letter Was received from the Hawera Road Board proposing that the two engineers should meet together and report upon the same, before any grant was made by their Board. Messrs. Bryson and Briscoe waited on the Board stating that they had measured the river near the site of the bridge at Te Roti, and found that the span was only !57 feet clear of the banks. Mr. Brigcoe | stated that he had been informed that the Government had set aside as a reserve for bridge timber a section on which a quantity of totara was growing suitable for bridge building. The engineer considered that it would coat fully £5 per foot to build the bridge ; with earthwork the bridge and approaches would cost nearly i>6oo. The deputation pointed out that the Mangatoki river was as dangerous as the Waingongoro. It was resolved that the Board petition the Government for assistance in the erection of bridges at Te Roti and Eltham over the Waingongoro, and also over the -Mangatoki on Skeet road, pointing out that these bridges will bring traffic to the railway line, and that without such assistance the funds at the disposal of the local body will be insufficient to meet the cost for some years. Seconded by Mr. Dingle and carried. voters' roll. The clerk was instructed to forward a roll to the Resident Magistrate, as required by the Amending Ordinance, 1877. PETITION was read from Mr. Costobadie and others i was read, asking for Hioks* Road to be : opened between sections 28 and 29, block 111., about 25 chains. Resolved, That the Board is prepared to pay half the cost of clearing the above line, the settlers to pay the balance, such contribution on behalf of the Board not to exceed £5. The' settlers not having paid any rates it was agreed that they had no present claim against the Board on rate account.
RESIGNATION. Mr. David Wilkie's resignation was receive'l and accepted. SUTHERLAND'S ROAD. Mr. Sutherland applied for repairs on Sutherland's line, as agreed at former meeting. The Engineer was instructed to have the work done. MANAIA ROAD. The Engineer reported on the difficulty of keeping this road in repair, and the serious expeuse incurred. Besolved, That the Engineer be instructed to retain maintenance men so long as may be required, and to fill in holes with fresh gravel where most needed, whenever weather permitted. Power was granted to him to close sections of road during repairs, and instructions issued to sue any person infringing the order. Such notice to be posted on the road. MAIN SOUTH ROAD. The secretary was empowered to order repairs to road near Oeo by maintenance I man. ! DISTRICT ROADS. Besolved that maintenance man in Block VIII. be paid off. ! DEFERRED PAYMENT MONEYS. Eesolved that the Clerk forward to the Commissioner of Crown Lands abstract of the six schedules forwarded for authority, and a list of the total amount of payments made by the Treasury, enclosing a request that monies duo under authorities given, be paid without delay, in order to meet engagements now due by the outgoing Board. DRAIN PIPES. Besolved that drain pipe 6be shifted off main road, inside the adjoining place. OVERDRAFT. Eesolved that the Chairman be empowered to countersign all cheques for accounts presented to meeting, and that the Bank of New Zealand be requested to allow an overdraft for urgent accounts up to £400 on both accounts. engineers' report. The Engineer reported that work had been commenced on Eainie Boad, and on Scott's and McLean's Boad. That work had been resumed on Auroa Boad. A balance-sheet showing assets and liabili- } ties had been prepared, and was kid before the meeting. The gravelling contracts had been completed, but the gravel on the Manaia Road had out through in places. The gravelling on Newsham's contract had been cut through, tested, and passed.
