JEeuter's Special to Star.] LONDON, May 15. The first match of the Australian cricketers in England was commenced to-day against eleven of Oxford University. The weather was fine, and there was a lively wicket. The Australians went in first, and the innings closed for 362. The following are the highest scores:— Ma- sic, c, 200; Giff->n, b. 19; Jones, c, ?.u ; Garrett, b, 41 ; Palmar, bowled, 18. Murdoch was bowled for nil. Massie batted splendidly, but was badly missed early in his innings. The play of the Australians was much admired, and the fielding of the University players was excellent. At the close of the day's play, Oxford eleven had two wickets down for five runs. May 16. Iv the House of Commons last night, a Bill was introduced by the Government for dealing with the question of the payment of arrears of rent in Ireland. The measure provides that the Irish Church surplus should be appropriated for the purpose of clearing tenants of their liabilities. The Church fund will thus be entirely exhausted. It has trauspired from reliable sources that before his release from Kilmainham gaol, Parnell promised that the agrarian outrages in Ireland should cease, aud he undertook to co-operate with Government towards that end. MELBOURNE, This Day. In the Legislative Assembly last night, Berry's amendment to the Address in Reply to the Governor's Speech, amounting to a vote of no-confidence in the Ministry, was rejected by 45 to 29, and the address was then passed. The reduced tariff for telographic messages between Australia and New Zealand will take effect from the Ist June next. SYDNEY, This Day. The ship Cashmere, 1238 tons, while in charge of the pilot, swung upen a sand-bank in Newcastle Harbor last evening, aud is expected to become a total wreck.
